After the battle was over, the units returned to original province they were in.
I don't have Premium and I don't recall that being a mechanic for it either.
I am a very active player(10 minutes go by, checking) so I did not end up going AI, 3hr until next day as well
I was attacking with (6)artillery on an AI province with some units coming for the responsive attack. I move my artillery out of melee range and kept my remaining Hero(Hank) and infantry in base. 30 minutes go by and check the action to find Hank and units 12 minutes from the enemy base in a responsive move that I did not command. I will win the fight but it was NOT the game plan.
My question is, is this a mechanic I am unaware of or did I find a glitch. Because I intended to keep that province under artillery fire until empty of enemy and then take the province when a good time(it was a capital)

I think this may be a intended behavior that involve unit identity, but it is quite subtle. I suspect this is what happened:
- You start with the arty and melee (hero + infantry) in a single stack (lets call this AA 1)
- You use the attack command to get your stack to bomb the enemy
- You split off the artillery and send them back. This is the crucial step: the newly split off artillery takes on a new identity (e.g., AA 2). But the remaining melee units takes on the original identity (AA 1).
- The initial command you issued to AA 1 is still in place for the melee stack (because you did not issue any new commands). An attack command for a melee stack means that it will move towards the target.
If the above is the reason for what you observed, then the simple solution is to be mindful of the identity. Be careful when splitting, and issue a stop command when neccesary.
Any sufficiently advanced tactic is indistinguishable from magic to the uninitiated.
That makes perfect sense to me, thank you for your response!
