Land Units Killing my Cruisers

I had 3 Crusiers, 30 attack, and 30 defense. Somehow, land units who were boarded with a total of 24.2 attack and 24.2 defense managed to CATCH them and are now beating them in battle. What in the world is this mechanic, and what am I missing?!? This is super frustrating.
