Has anyone had success playing as an island nation?

I have had minimal success playing as UK, Java, or Kyoto on the 500 player map, but plenty of success playing inland countries, particularly in India and sub-China regions. I feel as though having to navigate by water hinders island nations too much to have late game success. Has anyone played and won with an island nation?
