Okay. I figured it out.
I'm reliable, can and do work with allies and neutral opponents, I'm happy to use chat, and I ain't got no gold. In about a dozen games, I've been totally defeated once.
I shoot for the double-envelopment tank attack supported by air whenever possible, but my strongest tactic is waiting out an attack until I have the units I need to provide a good probability for victory. I know a couple of other tricks too, and make up new ones as needed.
