I heard that destroyers can rekt submarines, but how?..?

The sub is underwater

The destroyers is above the water

If you see the unit description. It says destroyers are great for protecting convoys and they destroy subs.

It was a matter of sheer will that we were able to eradicate the U-boats

dont forget hedgehogs, and what if a sub had an ability to crash dive, it would not be detected by destroyers sonar, but it would take damage over time like force March.

Go watch " Das Boot" (" The Boat"), a famous WW2 movie about a German submarine being chased around the Atlantic.

Submarines became less and less effective in wartime as time went on (much like in game) just because it got easier to find them. If you can find a submarine, you can avoid it too, and if you avoid a submarine, you don't have to use your precious depth charges. Sonar really did change the face of naval combat.
