multiple times ( more times then not ), when sending a plane out on patrol, its' patrol cone will flip ( usually to point east but sometimes elsewhere ), causing me to have to fly back to the airport when I just want to move a few degrees over. It's been like this for months.

This has always happened when splitting planes. The patrol cone will remain with the other group and a new cone defaults to due east.
Once you know this it is best to just make a temporary patrol over the starting airbase before splitting and giving orders.
