x-factor
Commandos
Hi,
Commando's are not receiving 100% strength increase in mountains. Their strength in attack is 10, with the bonus of 100%, does this mean it should be 20. If so then this is not happening.

My 2 commandos could not kill 3 infantry in mountain terrain, this battle took 4 rounds, even if one round was a "x" factor, they should have won.
Will any mods reply? Is this a known issue? and will it be investigated?
answers on a postcard
and btw, putting everything down to "x" factor is a cop out
Which level of infantry was it? Was the infantry defending in a core province? Any fortification there?
X-factor?

There is no lower or upper limit implemented for the so called "x-factor", which is basically following a bell curve. Although the chance is veeeeery small (maybe as low as 0.01%), extreme results like no visible damage dealt or multiple times the damage dealt may happen. Maybe they only happen in 1 of 10000 cases, but still they can. And we remember of course much more these extreme occurences then the usual combat results where everything goes as expected. [..]

thats why i try to avoid meleecombat
and looking at how insane x-factor is in 1.0 i think itβs quite fair to blame it when you dont deal the dmg you expect to
i had one game where it felt like iβm having 0 dmg ticks half of the time
Given all the factors of a battle including a random number for each attack which applies from zero to 100% of the rated damage it is not possible to draw any conclusions from a single battle.

The "X-factor" does overwhelm any consideration of unit strengths or weakness on offense or defense, andVorlonFCW wrote:

certainly counts far more than any terrain bonus.
The deeper question is:
"Do the published unit descriptors have anything at all to do with the battle mechanics?"
Having tested a couple dozen games on Sone, I can testify that documented values have
absolutely no meaning there.
Is CoW headed in the same direction?
They do, but in many cases the variance from the X factor gives the appearance of it simply being a random chance. With the 1.5 mechanics the variance is limited to a closer range and this yields a combat experience that is much more dependent on the specified values.cycle9 wrote:
