In Nuuk in game 1,071,718 I had a destroyer guarding a landing point. Around 30k troops came in to land and I was happy with that as the devs said that troops in ships cannot fight. When the troops ran into the ship, they sank it. I am pretty sure that some tanks and troops sitting in cargo holds can do no damage, especially to an armoured, heavily upgraded destroyer. I have some pictures of the fight during and after it.
Troops in ships can defend themselves, but are very weak (~0.5 defensive naval damage). In this case there was a ratio 30:1 and destroyers are not the most powerful units, which explains why the destroyer was damaged and could not stop the units alone.
I thought I read that they could not defend them selfs and that would make sends because realistically they would need to land to bring their weapons to bare on any other targets .....
