I have had the same thing occur to me. I even acquired a mech. infantry somehow and I didn't even research it. Oh well.
enemy regained territory, no explanation
In game 2.787.505, I captured all the territories in Scotland and the English ones down to Liverpool, Manchester, and Leeds. I was away from the game for an hour or so, now I've come back and the UK has somehow regained Lancaster and Manchester, though I have tanks still sitting in Liverpool and Leeds (ie, the way to Manchester is cut off). There is no notice in the front report of me losing a unit or territory (I had a tank in Manchester) and there are no stories in the Newspaper about me losing those territories or them revolting and going back to the UK. The UK now has a tank in Manchester and an armored car in Lancaster. I'm sure this is a bug...there's no way he could have got his forces there...if they'd come from the water, they'd still be disembarking (and I have a sub off the coast).
Please help!

you could have gotten mech inf bcause your enemy was building that unit when you captured the provence, it has happened to me with tank destroyers
This is the result of a rebellion.
Each day at day change provinces with low morale have a chance to revolt and join another country. This will be listed in the newspaper, but it does not list in the events, as that could cause hundreds of notifications in some later games.

And since 2787505 is a tutorial map with double speed there are daily even two chances for rebellions ..VorlonFCW wrote:
