How reinforcement (doesn't) work

First of, sorry if this gets posted in the german forum, I registered as english (german only secondary language) and I'd like it to be posted there but I can't switch language in the forums - at least not visible within reasonable time.

Scenario:

You have a province with an army stationed in it that is being attacked. Let's say both attacker and your defending army have a size of 5 units. now your reinforcement of another 5 units arrive. What is going to happen? The reinforcements are going to attack the attacker instead of simply joining up with your defending troops. I would understand if that was only the case if your reinforcement would have taken the same route as the attacker, because then they would be blocked to joining the defense, but no, it always happens that way, at least for me. This is bad, because you take way more losses and tactical maneuvers like reinforcing kind of gets so expensive in casualties that it is not an option anymore. which means, strategy loss.

A moderator once told me that you could click both your defending and your reinforcing armies, and then give (again) the order to move to the province (in which they are actually already stationed and fighting) and then they would both merge together. Unfortunatly that does not work. Defending army keeps defending, reinforcing army keeps attacking the attacker.

This kind of kills tactics and makes this game more of a hack and slash than a strategy game because you just have in the fight what you have.

Am I doing something wrong here or is this just how it is supposed to work?

If changed the language for this thread to US/EN!

Go to Setting -> General -> there you can change your language.

This doesn't seem like behaviour I usually see. When you have some units defending a place and you send in the reinforcements they should join the defenders unless you target the enemy directly. However, enemy sometimes can prevent you from doing that with some moves so your units wouldn't merge (I won some important battles that way).

Does this happens often or you saw it only once or few times? And did you order reinforcements to join the city or attack the enemy?

Thx for the settings hint. But it was already set to english. Only the multilingual was set to german without english. The way I understand it shouldn't move me to the german forum when my language is set as english and only the multilingal is activated as german. cause that means I also want to be able access german pages, but not only german without english. Otherwise multilingual would overwrite the mainlaguage setting and that would be very weird.

Regarding reinforcement, thx for the input however I know of the fact that when you aren't careful when sending troops to reinforce, then you might accidently order them to attack, that's why I am extra careful to really check that I see that green movement-arrow instead of the lightening-attack when ordering my reinforcement. That's why I am absolutly sure I did it right but it still went wrong. Also I lately I had this a couple times, but only in City battles, but those were the only battles I had to reinforce.

But what is even more annoying is that it used to be that you can merge the reinforcements that would accidently attack the attacker. To do so you would only have to activate them together with your defending army and give them the move order to the province center where the battle was already taking place, then they would automatically merge together. This would still not be like planned but better than nothing. But this doesn't seem to work either amymore.

How do you prevent enemy troops from reinforcing without attacking them? Would love to hear about that.
