This is a known bug and is done as some mobile devices the more units can cause older models to crash.
The devs are working on a fine balance of units shown and those that are invisible.

Invisible Units
Using the enhanced graphics, sometimes units are invisible - at any zoom level. When passing the mouse cursor over them they flash visible. The unit quantity seems to display but not the icon or graphic of the unit.
It can be either your own units or those of someone else. I am always on a PC but a friend using mobile device reports it happens there too.
