lvl 3 Rockets kill attacking bombers

Had a situation where I spotted 17 level 3 rockets on the ground at an enemy province so I attacked it with 5 level 6 bombers - the result: all 5 bombers killed and the newspaper reported 2 rockets killed (tho subsequent recon failed to find any rockets left on the ground)

The stats for rockets suggest they have a defense of zero against air power so what happened to me

AI rockets have a very scary ability to launch themselves at bombers just before attacking.
