In Scenario Europe Call of Nations map for 22 players
I had them based in Samara in in east Russia
I had them patrol to their farthest extent towards Dubovka in the Cossack lands.
The range circle showed that the could not attack directly Dubovka but when put on patrol the patrol zone extends past the white line of the range.
The planes then inflicted damage on the defenders in Dubovka and took damage from them in return fire.
So there is a bug that somehow allows planes on patrol to attack things that are outside of their range but within their patrol zone.
This has been a 'feature' of patrolling planes from the get go.EZ Dolittle wrote:

Just another instance of a poor design and even poorer implementation,
starting with the magical 14:59 time tick for no damage.
It has always been possible for 49% of the patrol circle to be placed beyond the white range circle. This is not unique to 1.5.
