Possible Glitch w/ Upgrading Aircraft Carriers

I had two lvl 1 aircraft carriers. One was carrying two fighters and the other was carrying two naval bombers. All planes were patrolling. I chose to upgrade both carriers to lvl 2. As soon as I clicked upgrade, my naval bombers disappeared. The fighters returned to land on the carrier but the naval bombers are just gone - what happened!?
