when I try to research I have no empty spaces to put items in that I need to research

That means you are already researching two items, correct? You can only research two items at one time. As one finishes, you may start another.

it says Ihave 2 free research slots but when I get to the research screen there is only research selections and the spot where the slots would be is just a white screen. I even tried another game and its the same thing

Perhaps you are trying to research a tech that has not become available yet? It has to be a certain day before some techs can be researched...

Sounds like it may be a browser issue. I hear that Chrome and Firefox have the least problems.
