Submarines attack issues/comments.

I noticed some things with respect to Submarines I would like to bring up here as they seem weird and not sure what I think and would like some input.

1st issue is a Submarine vs Submarine battle.

It so happened that I found myself in a battle with another submarine from the (USA) in this case. The first thing was that they are locked in battle for over 15 hours now and neither one is totally dead yet. This seems wrong to me.

Next, Am I to assume that both Subs are on the surface here, attacking each other with deck guns?

Also, I think if a Submarine wants to disengage during battle it should be allowed to try at least.

2nd issue is Submarine vs at Sea armies within a convoy with no Naval escorts.

I attacked a convoy which had a strength of Zero but had originally 42 units with in them. After about 15 hours of battle it was still afloat and down to 29. Now given the size of the convoy I can understand why it is taking so long to kill the convoy but it would seem to me that the convoy should be able to keep on moving and the submarine should also be able to disengage since there is nothing in the Convoy to kill it and speed was the Convoys defense not fighting.

Here are my requests please comment so we can consolidate this for the developers.

1. Submarines should be given a surprise attack modifier or something that will give it an initial large hit on its first attack.

2. Submarines should be allowed to try to disengage if in battle.

Extra stuff I thought of.

1. Would be nice if Subs could move faster if on the surface as this is how they actually traveled most of the time during WWI and WWII.

2. Subs should be able to designate what is its attacking, if there is a battle flotilla with Battleships and Cruisers it should be able to pick one attack it and run.

Thanks sorry for the long post.

I agree with the submarines attacking undefended convoys, i lost about 30 planes to 2 subs over 12hrs because my destroyer-submarine fleet had just passed through that area, 30 minutes later when my convoy of planes moves through they find these 2 subs from ai portugal.. i was inactive at the time so i came back on to find them at about 80% morale and my ships 8hrs away, convoys should be able to keep moving and submarines be able to retreat as you said..

Basically you made two propositions:

1. Make submarines much stronger (so they are able to sink enemy ships with one or two strikes)

2. Make submarine attacks non-blocking (limiting the submarine so one attack if not following the convoy)

I think that is interesting. I'm just afraid that it is hard to balance submarine effectiveness on by-passing troops...

I'm not sure that there were many sub vs. sub engagements during WWII. The only one I am aware of was a British sub firing at a U-Boat late in the war, and I don't remember it being decisive. I'm not entirely sure what the case was in the Pacific, but there were a lot of PT boats in that theater.

I would imagine that attack against subs would likely take place, while above the surface charging batteries. Bombers on patrol would be the most prolific predator.

The submarine should be super-effective against enemy convoys. Look at all the merchant ships that were sunk by German U-boats.

Thanks for boiling it down.

Admittedly I was attacking a huge Convoy with a single sub. I think a stronger initial attack, would do the trick.

The other thing was that Sub vs Sub thing that as a matter of fact is still going on with no winner now going on 17 hours. It seems to take a long time to kill each other.

I have noticed that subs seem to ignore enemy convoys passing right over them, I've had to actively give chase and log in when the units are nearby and click the attack button to facilitate combat. At the moment I'm unsure if this is a bug, or if I've placed the unit a couple of pixels out of place.

Confirmed. Pass right through. Over 10+ Times.

Submarines are supposed to stay hidden unless ordered to attack or attacked by a destroyer/naval bomber.

That is why a naval patrol feature would be nice and it would be historical.

Submarines should attack any enemy ship passing by (unless the premium account feature "non-aggressive stance" is selected).

If they don't, this may be a bug.

Their is a bug. I have tested this a lot.

Submarines will not attack convoy's going over them. Kal has seen it as well, and quite a few other people.

Yes I have seen this too. Plus, if you try to attack a Convoy that is disembarking the game will not let you. I think its because the units are so close to land.

That is stupid that you can't attack disembarking troops. Subs had machine guns and howitzers on their decks.

Submarines can attack disembarking troops. Currently they cannot attack embarking troops or troops already on land. In that case, they should not block the movement of the other army.

Fixed that and uploaded to beta, will go live next week.
