Another active player declared war on me and was able to take 1 of my provinces and my status was still 'peace', this should automatically change to war right?
Was it occupied by your troops? If not then you have no committed a "war" action. If yes, then there is an issue.

That's little more subjective. Since it was unoccupied, then it appears that the game mechanics are working. In S1914, it was automatic because you had to keep at least one regiment in each province. It takes some getting used to.
well, seems the fact that the game mechanics is working propelly is much more subjective 
(and anyway would be a non sense) as that was a bug already discussed in one early post and was supposed to be solved as an issue.
Occupation of your own provinces by someone should change your status to war, and if it doesn't then seems that the bug was not solved completelly
