Was your troops fighting? If they were they cannot retreat.
Vanishing troops
I was playing as Southern US and I was battling Canada for Hartford. My troops were greatly outnumbered so I decided to withdraw them before they were all slaughtered. When I commanded them to march to New York they vanished, I thought maybe it was a glitch so I reloaded the game and they were still gone. What's even weirder is when I flew a plane above Hartford to see if I could spot anything, I saw that the entire enemy force in was gone. Has a anyone else experienced something like this?

Yes, they were fighting. I thought you could retreat?
Nope. Your troops were very brave and fought till the end. As to where the enemy went... They could have moved on to a different province.
RIP 16th Infantry regiment.
But the enemy troops didn't have enough time to go anywhere and they just vanished, i'll just pretend my troops went Rambo on the enemy and took them down with them.
The poor 16th infantry regiment.... But Its useful to use planes before hand to scout for enemies so you can plan your move.
I did note combat in which both attacker and defender were eliminated (the Province was retained by the defender).HellPhire wrote:

This indicates, to me, the combat mechanics might calculate casualties for one side; then the other; then having the casualties removed. This would probably be the only way both sides could be eliminated.
This is the first time hearing this for me. This is very interesting how the game calculates the battle for this to occur.I Patton wrote:

The game mechanincs are so complex I can't even think about them. I just play. @HellPhire don't worry too much about these things. Once in a lifetime, y'know?
