You will notice that mobile units will be given the easiest/fastest route via Plains but you can choose to move them the way you want,you just have to be active to click it where you want it to go

It planned that route because you're moving tanks, which take a -50% movement penalty on Mountain terrain - so it's actually faster to avoid the mountains and stay on the plains, which have no movement speed penalty for tanks.General Sherman wrote:

So although the actual distance to travel is longer than if you'd taken the most direct (shortest distance) route, the total travel time to get to the destination is faster by going around the mountains. The same is true for other units like tanks and some ordanance units in Forest terrain.
