Years ago I played PBM Diplomacy. In those games you would submit your first three choices for countries to play to the game moderator. These would then be used to assign counties. Most people would end up with first or second choice, rarely would it go further down the line.
Just somethng to think about, I always seem to end up in the middle of the map, which is not my favorite place to be.

True the big main frames in high school were used to write banners by printing X's and O's. It could take hours to spell Happy Birthday or similar
Ah, yes. People got really creative with that... for a trip down memory lane:
so why not just join games with free country selection, or make one with free country selection?

It sounds like a good idea Pete, but I expect that if a group of people who intended to work together chose strong starting positions that were mutually beneficial that there would be further outcries of cheating, rigging, and general unfairness of such a system.
