I've tried to find an updated guide for AI relations. It seems the 24 hr trade embargo does not apply anymore. In the 22 player maps, I consistently see players surprise attack AI and retain 88+ popularity. Does anyone know why that is?

I see AI attack players (me that is) that do not attack others by surprise (always do 24 hrs embargo, in return, and then attack) and only on response to hostility, AI countries going from peace to declaration of war directly while nothing really changed, only upgrade of 25 artillery from lvl2 to lvl4.
It seems eratic.
But then since AI is based on human behavior maybe this will be the result.

Even if you go to war against a country that is hated by AI, you may even become more popular than hated.

Honestly size as a deietrminant/factor of popularity is ridiculous, big countries can be popular, look at the states, only if you have a difference of opinion or you use force (or is used against you) it will render the big country impopular. I think the game suffers too much from the David against Goliath syndrome.

I have to see/try this in practice to see if that makes life a bit more manageable with respect to AI.
What I do miss is the mutual relationship matrix of countries amongeach other, this is hardly espionage information, only for wicked players

I followed the advice of pod_than. He was correct that going to war with unpopular countries increases global popularity. Does anyone know what happens when you move your army through an AI's territory? This troop movement is under the assumption the country has given you right of way or shared map.
