Does SBDE still apply with defense?

If someone is attacking my army stack, does SBDE still matter?

Yes

I will elaborate: Yes and no.

Yes, when you are attacked your forces will return fire, and this return fire is subject to the SBDE limits

However,

When you are attacked the attacker will be limited in effectiveness by the sbde, but their attack will be absorbed by ALL of your units. So a bulkier stack will survive an attack longer.
