I assumed I would receive a great reward for doing the survey and that would be getting rid of the annoying icon in the lower right. No such luck 
The icon will leave once the duration of the survey is over.
I don't have any information on getting paid gold to do it. My assumption was that one would answer it specifically to guide the game in a direction they would like.

There is no confusion; just sarcasm.
The reward is that you can shape the future development of the game 
We don't want users to participate just so they get a reward, we only want sincere feedback.
