Multiple Humans Attacking AI

Sirs,

We're in the middle of the AWC tournament and a reoccurring question has come up, again, which I'm certain has been addressed, but for the life of me I cannot find the right search term to locate the answer.

Alliance 1 and Alliance 2 members both land in Sweden (an AI) after AI peace has ended. After multiple rounds of both attacking and ship bombardment, Alliance 1 is awarded the city- even though the Alliance 2 player dealt the "final blow" on the defender. Alliance 2's land units were teleported away and Alliance 1 owns the city.

Can a sage member of the group explain how we can understand this moving forward so we don't keep having Ground Hog Day over and over in future matches?

A thousand thanks

I have wondered about this for a long time. Didn't happen a lot, but my observations suggest the province goes to the attacker that fired the first shot - not the last shot.

Nope, absolutely not. I think it is purely random.

Random? Hard to believe there isn't some unknown game mechanism.

It is not random, it does go to the nation that kills the last defender. BUT if you start combat and are NOT in the province center (either from skipping or the combat timer causing you to enter combat before reaching the dot) then the nation that is in the province is awarded the province. (I will provision this by saying that I have been away from the game and this might have changed since the last time I tested this in 1.5)

One feature of each ground/sea unit is they they can engage other units without actually making contact (dot to dot) with enemy units. One of the Dev's explained recently that melee units have a small (don't recall the distance in km) around them. I'll call it their "Area of Effect"

You can see this in effect when a unit is within 5 minutes of capturing a city, if you re-activate unit by restating it's path, or Start/Stop Forced March, the unit will capture the city (even though it has not reached the actual DOT of the city). It will interact with enemy target within it's range. This is mechanic that's causing your results.

The first unit marched all the way to the city centre and on contact, began fighting. The Second army, initiated combat with the AI City while it was outside the city but having the city in it's Area of Effect. Even though the Second Army killed or dealt the final blow, as S Schmidt mentioned, the player actually in the city is the one who claims the prize.

You can also do this when near enemy units, if unit Starts/Stops moving or resets movement orders, it will activate an action if other units are within it's "Local area of Effect".

General Maximus Decimus Meridius - "Are you not entertained?"

The "area of effect" is a km measurement -- thought I read somewhere once it's 5 km. The time saved by teleport is more for slower units and less for faster units. Speeds are terrain dependent.
