I remember from Sumpremacy 1914 that there was an option to start a no gold game as premium user. Does CoW has such an option? I can't seem to find it.

There is not such an option. There are several community events that are run without gold. Check the community events section of the forum.
The next one will be the players league game starting on the first of each month. There should be a signup thread posted soon.
