Yeah, I once found myself fighting France, Italy, UK and even USA at the same time as Germany.

I was in a HWW where Germany got conquered by Denmark(!) I ended up joining a coalition with denmark and winning the game. I saw his units so I know he didn't use gold (or maybe a very minimal amount)

That type of person reads words in phrases, but fails to see the context between words in a phrase. Let alone that the context of phrases can still be managed...
