Please Explain the Battle rules for the game to me

I have units in a city with a level 4 bunker firing upon someone that in mountainous terrain who is using artillery back at me.

The result according the newspaper is I've lost 2 Arty, 1 Anti Tank and 1 Anti-Air and him NONE.

we both have large stacks when this began I was at 79 STR him at 75, but besides the fact that I am sitting in a level 4 bunker which if i read it says -65% to damage, he's at a -25% penalty firing from the Mountains? is there a penalty for firing INTO mountains from a city? (arty in citie's do not take penalties).

NM I see what they have foG of war made it seem as if they had greater numbers, but the NEWSPAPER is hard to read/understand where the losses were so let me ignore the fiirst question and ask what'st he trick to reading hte newspaper

My guess is his arty is of a higher level than yours. Researching past lvl.1 is a good idea in arty fights.

First rule: Know your enemy. Key to the game is knowing what your enemy has.

Second rule: Newspaper reporters are unreliable. not everything gets reported sadly. Some times only the last unit of a stack will be reported instead of each one. Depends on the mood and the blood alcohol content of the reporter is my guess.

I would suspect that miss Injinji is correct about the range, higher levels of artillery can shoot farther.

There is also a tactic of "shoot and scoot" that can come into play here if your enemy knows it.

Since you don't have a clear view of the enemy, there is a delay in returning fire. Not much, but a little. So your enemy moves forward, fires a volley, and instantly turns tail and runs. Your artillery wake up and return fire just a minute too late, because they couldn't see the enemy, so the enemy gets away free sometimes. Getting a better view with some planes can help.
