Skynet : When AI Declares War

Good morning / evening ladies and gents,

Today I had a small realisation about AI declarations of war. This is a working theory, but I've seen some evidence of it so I thought I would share it so others may also provide their own experience.

General theorem :

( see freezy's post below )

Likelihood of AI declaration of war increases with the size of your army ( the larger your army, the lower your popularity with the so called AI-Union).

Corollary :

Likelihood of AI declaration is offset by the size of your army. The larger the army in comparison to the AI's own military strength, the lower the likelihood.

In the past few games I've seen the AI declare on countries that more popular than me on paper, but had been weakened by recent conflicts. So I wonder if the AI is programmed to only proactively declare wars they have a possibility of winning.

Global popularity is greatly reduced by actions such as invading an AI country without a previous declaration ..

Starting wars without a previous declaration was removed:

Actions that improve your popularity with elite AI:

- being enemy with their enemies

- being friends (good diplomatic relations) with them and their friends

- trading with them

- getting war declared on you (added Nov 27th 2019)

Actions that decrease your popularity with elite AI:

- having peace or better relations with their enemies

- having bad diplomatic relations or war with them or their friends

- starting new wars without declaring them before (removed Nov 27th 2019)

- when producing troops while already being unpopular

- having troops in their country without right of way

- getting your spies caught by them

The largest map I have played so far in the 73-nation Alls In historical map. So far, it looks like if you keep the size of your military under 200 it will not affect your popularity much ... 8)
