Welcome to the Call of War Strategic Discussion Thread, where we discuss different strategies within the game and how they can be used effectively. This thread aims to generate helpful discussion that will shed some light on the game and make it so all of the features that the developers so passionately coded in can be used to their full potential.
Anyone can bring up any topic here for discussion or express any thoughts they have on the game, from highly specific things like the province of Gibraltar to whole concepts, such as resource management. Each week (probably every Saturday if I can) I will post a new "Topic of the Week" to spark ideas and help keep this thread alive.
Have fun, and hopefully the deepest, darkest secrets of this game can be revealed in time
Topic of the Week:Armored Cars
Armored cars are the first unit researched in the armored tech branch. They are very fast and have decent damage against basic infantry, but aren't very good at attacking main armies.
Some questions to consider:
-How often should armored cars be built?
-How should armored cars be used to maximize their potential?
-What units do armored cars pair best with?

From V1nd1cator's outline I will assume he intends to continue. I am finding his comments on the issue of defense very interesting. And I personally do not see much to argue with. The one comment I do have is my dislike of the word "Turtling" as the word seems to have gotten a rather negative connotation. What we are really discussing is the use of a defensive strategy.
I would like to also suggest that the use of a defensive strategy also depends on whether or not it is an open ended game or team play. Using V1nd1cator's example of France if it is team play France may not need a defensive stance if his team mates are nearby.
Team play is some what a different animal than open play. I really enjoy team play I just wish more players understood there is a difference. Maybe we can discuss that at a later date. Sorry I digress.
Carry on V1nd1cator.

Sorry some of this is no longer applicable as I just posted what I thought I had lost.

After experimenting with armored cars for a bit, I've found that they are quite good scouts and also good for flanking around the enemy's front lines and causing chaos in the back. Typically, they shouldn't be built in extremely large numbers because they are quite weak, but having a small reserve of them can be beneficial until you are able to research mechanized infantry.

Armored cars are good, like salbalkus said, for flanking. I generally use a modified Blitzkrieg tactic where I bombard all the planes and units (without anti-air, of course) on the ground before my enemy can even react while my enemy is sleeping (it's easy to see when a human sleeps because of the newspaper). I attack head-on with infantry, light tanks, anti-aircraft, and sometimes medium tanks. I then, after capturing a province with inner access to the enemy's country, begin laying waste to the inner core of the country. Using flanking tactics, I am generally able to maneuver around 15-20 units around the enemy, virtually leaving their country defenseless. I then go for resource-rich areas where they need the resources being produced for vital war material. Finally, with their country in shambles and their last units on their last resources, I converge inwards upon them.
That or I just rush in with freaking everything and destroy everything in my path.

Reading all of this I see no point in turtling other than to troll the other players so they have to work harder to win.

Interesting thread. I'm fairly new to CoW but have played strategy games for years. I can see use of Turtle tactics mixed with other strategies depending on the Diplomatic developments and geographic considerations. Example using France, If Germany, Italy and Spain are teamed while you are allied with England, you could use the turtle on the Pyrenees/Alps line to hold Spain/Italy at bay while using an offensive strategy versus Germany. i am sure there are other situations where two front wars are a problem that a turtle on one front could be applied.

I would say, from my own opinion, that turtling is not the worst tactic everβessentially wait for some idiot to think they can beat you, they lose all their forces, and walk right into their territory.
In one game I was Sweden, allied with Finland and an expansionist Spain, I had little room for expansion, meaning that the full extent of my growth was most of Norway, Iceland, and GB/Ireland. As Vindicator mentioned, I was big on fortifications and core development. Unfortunately, even with most of my resources at ic5 and infra3 (only rare, both single oils, and 2 foods), and my biggest population centers at barracks3, my oil production hovered around 80-150 per hour, my food was anywhere from -200 to 10 per hour depending on how many barracks were activated. It was a give or take; either I had no food or a bit more manpower (which I also lacked).
What, if anything, was I doing wrong?
PS I did not win, but my territory was never taken either.
