Exactly! If they want to become Russian, let them, but through diplomacy and democracy! I'm sure if a referendum is held and they decide to become Russian, the Ukranian governmetn will understand! But if you take it through sheer military power, that's breaking the pact!
Crimea- Russian or Ukrainian
We all know that last year, the Russian federation held elections in Crimea to determine whether or not the Crimea should Return to Russian administration or stay as Ukrainian territory. The Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to become Russian which provoked tears and tantrums from the western world. I would like to know, do you think Crimea is Russian, or Ukrainian?I

There was a referendum and Porshenko didn't understand, neither did the west, typically.Pablo22510 wrote:

Hmm.
How are we sure if the referendum was unbiased?
True, it's something that it seems Putin would lie about. He isn't very credible I have found.
A referendum was held, yeah, but only after use of military power, and the pro-Russians won because the rest had been chased out. And the referendum was probably rigged.comrade dave wrote:

Oh. Then have a referendum with the pro-Ukrainians there, see how it turns out.
Exactly. "probably" because people like Porshenko and Obama are pretty much poor losers. It's an armed conflict by the way Pablo, your not going to shake hands with the person shooting at you.

My point is that it could all have been solved easily if it wasn't for Putin's imperialist ambitions. But Obama didn't react violently enough, so Putin thinks he's a coward.
Putin took advantage of a situation that had been made by the illegitimate Ukrainian government, Russian people wanted to be Russian, Obama didn't react violently enough is good because he knows Putin wouldn't back down, and with the world's largest nuclear stockpile, Putin would have the means to kick Obama's ass before he crossed the border.

Yes, it was illegitimate, but the previous guy was a bastard who took out loads of money for him. And he imprisoned Timoshenko for speaking against him.comrade dave wrote:

Not the point, we're are on about the Crimea and all parties involved not the man in charge before it kicked off.Pablo22510 wrote:

It was because of him that it kicked off.
It was because of the illegitimate Ukrainian government this kicked off, anyway not the point don't change the subject.

It is the point. And it wasn't because of the illegitimate government. It was because of Putin, and because of the previous guy.
Putin wasn't involved until the the Pro-Russians looked serious and it is not the point, we are discussing whether or not Crimea is Ukrainian or Russian, not how it all started.

Hmmm yes crimea did vote to become russian but i would like to note that in 1938 when Germany annexed austria the people of austria voted 99.7561% in favor of the annexation. Funny how people vote when you have a gun to your head.

But then you realise that Austria has always been close to Germany.

Admittedly yes, but they weren't close enough to want to become apart of Germany. The UK is close to the US but we don't want to become apart of the US.

Well, they speak the same language, have the same culture, fought and died in the thousands together, existed together for hundreds of years and maybe the fact that Germany looked quite imposing.
