Demi-World Chronicles- Titanic War

Heyo! @whowh @K.Rokossovski @Karl von Krass you all know what this is about from the thread Fiction. The rest of you... do what you like.

The Titanic War- 1914~1918

The Titanic War was the result of intense military, economic and ideological rivalry between the great powers of the Westland. The deterioration of relations began in 1903, with the disastrous War of the Noran Recreation. The Pegronian Union developed unprecedented hate for the Norans, and the Westland was shocked by the Creation of the Red Union in 1904, mirroring the Noran Union. Its ideology was unacceptable by the Armstris and Pegronians, and both nations interests were threatened by its creation. Both had hoped to grab swathes of land in the destabilisation following the War of the Noran Recreation, but instead were slapped in the face with the creation of a great power.

Relations continued to go south in the next years. The URI won an astounding victory in the War of 1904, giving it absolute control over the surrounding region. The Nation also became communist like the Red Union, and allied itself with the Red Union. A naval arms race began between the Armstris Empire and Red Union, which made a naval conflict virtually inevitable. In 1910, the slow annexation of the Blacklands by the Armstris saw Lesotho join the Noran/Inamortan Alliance. Beeth and Anglia, while both puppets of the Armstris, had populations extremely anti-Armstris, the same applied to Azernia.

The West Pact or Entente Pact, formed between Mesra, Pegronian Union, Dora and the Armstris Empire was very fractured. By 1912, both Dora and Mesra had virtually left the pact, and the Pegronians and Armstris only remained allies due to a common enemy. In 1913, Dora virtually dismantled its armed forces, making its entry into a war impossible. Meanwhile the URI created the West League, a formal and strong alliance between its puppets, itself, the Red Union and Lesotho.

The final straw that sparked the Titanic War began with the Blacklands Uprisings. Beeth, Anglia, Azernia all revolted against the Armstris. This was a great insult to the nation, Fu Hong having said centuries before that “Our flawless Empire does these nations a great favour by not fully occupying them and wiping out their populace.” Anglia, Beeth and Azernia were all fully occupied, and somewhat following Fu Hong’s words, the Azernian Genocide began. Following these events, Lesotho and the URI ordered partial mobilisation, encouraged by the Red Union. The tensions became unbearable, and hell broke loose when the Inamortans entered some military assets into Azernia to “save the populace from extermination.”

This action was due to bolstering Inamortan confidence, and was meant to start a war. The Red Union assured them that it would join in any war, and the Inamortans saw their chance upon Dora’s demilitarization. So the act was simply an excuse to spark a war and not be blamed, so as to stop international intervention. The resulting war was unprecedented in the carnage it caused and destabilised the world.

“First Line” trench, filled with Inamortan men.

The Armstris Empire declared war upon the URI February 3rd, the Red Union on the 5th and all of the URI’s puppets on the 6th, Lesotho on the 8th. The Red Union declared war on the Armstris Empire on the 5th and the Pegronian Union on the 6th. The Titanic War had begun, and it would become one of the greatest conflicts of the 20th century.

Technology of war in 1914

The planning and conduct of war in 1914 were crucially influenced by the invention of new weapons and the improvement of existing types since the past wars. The chief developments of the intervening period had been the Self-Propelled Artillery and the Rapid Fire Rocket Artillery, as well as the Devastators. The Red Union was the inventor of the RF Rocket Artillery, but it had infant versions only, for example the H.3. Meanwhile the Armstris Empire possessed the greatest Devastator Fleet, 300 Emperor Class Devastators. The Armstris were also the only nation to produce SP Artillery, a new kind of mechanized artillery that “rained death upon tanks”. These technologies would be prime factors in the outcome of the war.

The Initial Stages of the War

Initial strategies

The Ember Plan

The Ember Plan was the initial Inamortan plan for a lightning victory over the Armstris First Colonies. General Richton Ember oversaw the planning in the months leading up to the war. The attack was to compromise of 25 infantry divisions (250,000 men), 10 armoured divisions (3,000 tanks and armoured cars), 500 Artillery pieces and 800 planes. The Inamortan forces would sweep south and wipe out the weak Armstris Garrison in Free Azernia, and then dismantle her ownership of Occupied Azernia. The Plan’s failure would not matter, since if the offensive was stopped or pushed back, the Inamortans were not in danger due to the buffer space provided by their puppets the Eastern Alliance and Tropia.

However, the war came sooner than expected and only 12 infantry divisions were available. The Inamortan generals panicked, not wanting to fight advanced Armstris equipment that would arrive to reinforce the enemy soon, and so launched a badly coordinated offensive all the same. The result was disastrous. 7 infantry divisions were cut off and encircled, 5 others were decimated. It was a major Armstris victory in the first few months of the war. Despite this, the Armstris could not seize the initiative. Not enough resources or manpower was available, and so they settled in for defence.

The Strategy of the Pegronian Front

When war broke out, the Pegronians were increasingly nervous. Their naval prowess was completely unhinged, and their air force was inferior. Their only condolence was the fact that they were an island, therefore harder to attack. In fact, the Pegronian Union was caught completely off guard. It had actually began considering leaving the Western Pact, and somehow missed the hints of war. Luckily for the Pegronians, the Norans did not know this.

Nora had had its heart torn out by the Pegronian Union many times before in history. Therefore, the Red Union had an irrational fear of the Pegronians. In reality, a quick Noran assault would have decimated the Union. But due to overestimation, the Pegronians managed to pull together. Each side on the front had different strategies:

The Pegronian Plan One

Plan One outlined an invasion of the Red Union. However, it was different to the other Pegronian invasions. Instead of attempting to punch through a wide eastern front with Nora, it would focus on poorly defended Wintonia. Over 130 divisions were to land there, with the Union putting all its hopes on this offensive. The date was set for 1915 April 22nd, and the Pegronian high command believed the URI would be neutralised by then, securing his invasion force’s western/southern flank.

The Red Union Red Fortress

Whilst Pegronia planned an offensive, the Norans were focused on the defensive. Red Fortress had begun with the Iron City in 1909, and was now a formidable line of Fortress Cities and defensive positions along the coast. The navy was also ordered to be vigilant and remain in port. However, Wintonia was ignored just as the Pegronians hoped, and it housed virtually no Red Union troops or defensive structures, except the weak Wintonia Republic National Guard, a small force of 35,000 ill-equipped men. The coast near Norso was also significantly reinforced, but there some plans were laid for an offensive.

The Pegronian invasion of Wintonia was met with great alarm, however could not be reacted to in time. In just 5 days, April 28th, Wintonia had fallen with almost no resistance. Noran forces were still a week off when news came, and so the 550,000 headed for Wintonia prepared to defend rather than attack. The Red Union was stabbed in the back, and the fall of a Red Republic came out of nowhere. Nora was now fully in the war; it borders breached by the Pegronians.

“Today, April 28th, marks the surrender of the final Red garrison in the Red Republic of Wintonia. The peoples of that republic are now regrettably under the power of the imperialistic Pegronians. This does not mean the people of Wintonia have been forgotten! Liberation will come! The cowardly enemy attacked us from the rear, now we shall deliver a blow so severe it shall stop the evil heart of the Pegronian Union from beating!” – Part of the speech of the Noran Minister of War following Pegronian assault

The Red Union, whilst nervous, was also infuriated. Yes, 1914 and 1915 had been bad years, but the Norans still stood strong and hope for victory was present. Now, a Red Republic had fallen- an entire nation¬¬- a great humiliation for the Red Union. Operation Revenge was instantly planned by the Red High Command, planning to absolutely crush the Pegronians with 3,500,000 men. However, it was still some months before such a force could be assembled, and the Pegronians were using their time to launch offensives into the URI.

On April 29th, Pegronian forces began penetrating Inamortan territory, initiating open combat between Pegronian forces and Inamortans for the first time. They advanced about 50 miles, but Inamortan resistance quickly stiffened. The Pegronians merely scoffed, 1,500,000 men were coming soon, and when they arrived, Wulf, Hog and incredibly young commander of the Pegronian forces General Johan, were to launch a well-coordinated massive assault into the URI to knock it out of the war. The main objectives for that plan were the Inamortan industrial heartland, Tropia and South Inamorta oilfields, and the Inamortan border with Nora.

Meanwhile, despite the disaster in Wintonia, Kraken B was actually moved forward, to the 3rd of May. Noran naval commanders were squirming with glee- if Inca fell the Armstris “jugular vein” would be cut. 3,550 ships were at their disposal- surly such a fleet could never be defeated. The Armstris Empire meanwhile was completely oblivious to Noran plans, and was focusing on a proposed “Assault Devastator” design for faster, stronger Devastators.

Before Kraken B and the intense combat of 1915 can be further discussed, the rest of Demi-World should be mentioned at this point:

In 1914 the war came as a shock to many. Dora was pressured to join the war due to its official membership in the West Pact, but it was exempt since the Army was completely reconstructing.Mesra meanwhile glanced west in mild interest. The Mesrans were absolutely certain of a Pact victory, and would immediately support the Pact if Nora began to turn the tide to prevent a Red Union hegemony, however that nation refused to enter the conflict. (Although some designs, ships and planes were sent to the Pegronian Union)

The Madian Empire also experienced turmoil. The young Emperor wished to join the war and support the Armstris, however was dissuaded by his General Staff, and good luck that he was since a Madian entry would instantly result in a world war.

Order Empire’s reaction to the events of 1914 were the most interesting. The nation had risen like a phoenix from the ashes, and retained a powerful position. Despite its distance to the Westland, many politicians argued that an Order entry would result in a world war, and should the Empire be on the winning side, their power would increase further. However, more were afraid of losing, and therefore lose their power too, so the Order Empire stayed out of the war, instead continuing its steady spread of influence in the Central Islands.

From all the nations of the World, only a few sent support to the belligerents in 1914. Mesra sent some ships and some resources to Pegronia whilst the Almanians sent a sliver of support to the Armstris.

As 1914 raged, the world became less and less interested in the war. Instead, the world focused on its other problems, in particular the Madian Empire and the tensions in the Norseland. Madia had ordered partial mobilisation (and Sora had replied in kind) and despite the initial decision not to join the war, it seemed the Emperor might still spur on a war of aggression in the Norseland. Luckily those tensions rose no further, and within a few months both Madia and the Soran Empire demobilised their respective armies.

Infinity Land also had major problems. A nation already ravaged by war and economic collapse had now lost a large amount of imports from the URI, Nora and the Armstris Empire. King Helson only just managed to grip onto power and stability, having to cede some more land to Dora (so that the sphere under his influence would shrink and make it easier to control the populace).

But the nation the war had the most effect on was Mesra. Already on the way to ultra-nationalistic dictatorship, this war of “Imperialism vs Communism” only sped up the process significantly. Mesra would eventually become a dictatorship, and that would lead to another major war in some decades’ time.

1915 was another year of reassurance of Pact success. The only major news of the year beside the war itself was the Doran military reconstruction nearing end, and although seemingly unimportant but a major event, the major reinforcing of Dora’s colonies. The Doran Navy was already finished reconstructing, and in 1915 looked impressive with 4,000 main ships and a further 3,000 lesser vessels. Dora held the world’s second largest Devastator fleet too, and the Norans nervously glanced south, their foreign embassy working overtime to get Dora to stay out of the war. The Dorans however would not listen to words but victories. The Doran Empire was unwilling of war, but in 1915 with such an obvious advantage, it did not mind getting a share of the spoils. Effectively only one thing could dissuade them, some major Noran victories.

On May 3rd, 1915, 11:55 PM, an audacious fleet of 3,550 main ships, and over 2,500 smaller/transport ships set off for the Island of Inca. The fleet was aware it would be spotted very soon by Armstris patrols, but it simply did not care. Its very existence was a logistical miracle, and it was genuinely believed to be invincible. The Armstris patrols did indeed spot the Fleet just one hour after it left Deval Port. A force of 1,350 Armstris ships and some 500 escort ships was gathered to head north to meet the enemy fleet. The Armstris were in fact incredibly surprised but happy. In their eyes the Norans were idiotic to try to breach the Grand Sea Route. The Armstris fleet would meet them at around the String Isles to the north of Inca, and the Armstris could call on a further 700 ships from the area and over 2,500 planes. Intelligence would also be firmly in their grip, whilst the Norans were sure to struggle with such a large fleet.

At around 2:50 AM, May 4th, the two fleets’ scout planes and some fighter elements clashed. Reports showed the Norans were losing more planes, but by a smaller margin than expected. Something was off.

The something was a new, top secret Red Union fighter plane- the Red Sparrow. This fighter had been in the works since 1912, and some 350 were produced for Kraken B. Whilst not even on par with the unbelievable Armstris fighters, it could put up a much better fight than its predecessor, the DZ-I. This would worry the Armstris, but not too much.

At about 3:25 AM, the two side’s air forces came into combat. The Armstris had a wide variety of bases to launch from, Inca, String Isles, as well as the 8 Emperor class Carriers and 3 escort carriers. As such, they could field a large number of air craft, and repair, refuel and launch much faster than the Norans. The Armstris commanders knew that if the Noran fleet carriers were sunk, the battle would be won and the Norans put in a very bad position.

Naval combat commenced soon after. Devastators were present, wreaking havoc. The naval and aerial combat was incredibly intense. After some hours both sides had lost about the same amount of ships and planes (with the Norans faring worse). The Armstris commander sent a request for withdraw so that some reinforcements could arrive, but his seniors ignored him.

Despite their logistical and technical supremacy, the Armstris had overlooked a few major details.

Firstly, the Noran fleet was 3 times larger than the Armstris fleet, and the Noran naval commanders had a perfectly fine structure, unlike Armstris beliefs that the fleet was badly coordinated. Secondly, these ships were not the old civilian ships or outdated ships from the 1910s, but all modern (with even some 65 Devastators). Thirdly, the Incans and String Islanders were not happy to be under the thumb of a colonial power.

After 7 hours of combat, both sides withdrew slightly. Open combat still took place, however, the two fleets had exhausted themselves. The casualties were horrific- the Armstris lost 500 planes to the Noran 670 and 760 ships to the Noran 930. Smaller ships and escorts numbers on both sides were slashed greatly. But the greatest disaster for the Armstris was an unexpected revolt in Inca and the String Islands.

Inca had never been formally occupied by the Armstris Empire, and the Incans who put up a valiant defence in the Incan War were still burning for revenge. Underground movements had gathered a good number over the decades, and the naval battle taking place close to their shores, with the Armstris army in distress and working overtime, the rebels saw their chance to strike.

The Incan Revolt began in the far north, some 700 armed locals stormed multiple prisons, air fields and ACS structures. The entire Inca rose in arms, and this absolutely smashed Armstris control of the land. Suddenly, a large number of air fields were out of operation, 260 grounded planes sabotaged and the HQ for the battle under a ferocious fight. The String Islanders copied the Incans, and whilst were crushed in hours, still disabled a few important air fields and 50 planes.

The Noran commander, when informed of the temporary chaos, surged forward. His ships cut through the Armstris forces, and disorganized the enemy. Temporary air supremacy proved fatal for the Armstris Empire, 3 fleet carriers and all escort carriers were sunk by Noran suicide bombers. Even worse, when the Armstris tried to retreat south-east, they came across a submarine force of 80 (mainly Noran with 10 Inamortan subs) along 35 cruisers/destroyers. Trapped between the two forces, the Armstris struggled to escape but failed. Within hours, all carriers were sunk, and all the battleships had suffered grievous damage.

Finally, some reinforcements arrived from other bases, and 80 ships bolstered the dwindling Armstris strength. It was not enough, and the Norans retained their air supremacy for the rest of morning and afternoon. The Norans received their own reinforcements soon, 130 ships and 2 carriers. By the end of afternoon, the Armstris were making a comeback, and so the Noran commander ordered a “hell bombing”, thousands of Noran planes took off and smashed into Armstris ships like rockets in suicidal attacks, in what was known as the “Red Sky Attack”.Forum attachmentArmstris ship sinking after Noran suicidal attack

By the end of the day, the Armstris great fleet had ceased to exist. 1,000 ships lay sunk or crippled, the rest out of action. The Noran losses were large too- some 1,850 ships were sunk and scores more crippled. But whereas for the Norans reinforcement was coming in the form of 200 more ships and troop convoys, the Armstris lines were stretched and no real forces could come forward. By May 6th Noran forces were taking the String Isles and landing across Inca. Inca was fortified heavily, however the Incan Revolt, Incan collaboration and relentless Noran bombardment caused it to surrender in 3 days.

May 9th was celebrated in the Red Union- an incredible victory, the first real one of the war, had been won and the day was declared a national holiday. The Armstris navy was now seriously hampered, and did not have the numbers to cover a wide area any more. Inca, the Heart of the Grand Sea Route was now Noran, the String Isles too. More importantly Norso and the Armstris colonies above Inca were all cut from the Home Island, and were sure to die off soon, with them dying hundreds of thousands of men, and thousands of ships and planes.

The victory came as a slap to the Armstris. They had been too surly, too complacent. Their navy did not outgun the Red Navy by a wide margin any more, nor did their planes. The naval staff, despite what was thought, had performed humiliatingly badly. The Armstris were also reminded that the Red Union was the largest economy in the world and not a minor nation to lose so easily.

The League victory in the Naval Battle of Inca was incredibly significant. It was one of the most important victories of the war. Morale was supercharged, Pact morale sank, and the Armstris economy was hit savagely. A League victory, it seemed, was not impossible after all.

However, the battle also had some side effects. The Mesrans were now staring westward, deep in thought, nervous at the thought of a Red Union victory. The Dorans were intimidated, however may have still entered the war.

By May 1915 both the Pact’s economies and the League’s were truly feeling the pinch. The world was no different- the Red Union’s economy was not contributing to the world anymore, oil exports from the URI had stopped, steel from the Pegronians and food from the Armstris were all in high demand. The countries that now had the responsibility to hold the world’s markets (Alman, Sora, Mesra and Dora) did not have a large enough industrial base to deliver. The world was sinking into economic depression ever so slowly.

After the disaster in Inca, the Pegronian Navy took on a larger role in the war. Army funds were cut by 20% to give to the navy. Meanwhile, the garrison in Wintonia had reached 2,000,000 men (essentially the maximum number the Pegronians could field) and was preparing for a simultaneous offensive into the URI alongside Hog and Wulf. However, before the offensive could take place, Hog would have to connect with Wulf’s forces. And for that to happen, Tropia would have to fall.

Operation Land Demon was launched on May 7th. Hog’s entire force, including 95% of his reserves, surged forward to meet Tropian/Inamortan garrisons. As luck would have it, the Inamortan forces had been suffering a delay of supplies and were in bad shape (this was not “luck” but rather Tropian resistance fighters). Tropia’s more rural terrain fell soon, but Hog’s main objectives (Capital of Tropia and the Tropian Oil Fields) remained rigid. Most major cities were besieged, Armstris armies unwilling to bleed dry in urban warfare. Wulf meanwhile launched his own assault from the north, and managed to connect with Hog on the 13th. But the pockets of besieged Inamortans would still have to fall before Wulf, Hog and Johan could launch their offensives.

The Red Union, after the victory at Inca, lay siege to the Armstris island colonies north of Inca. This counted for 1,000,000 men (mainly stationed in Norso) and a great chunk of Armstris economy. However, already the Armstris were planning to take Inca back, in Operation Grave. The Norans wanted to assault south from Inca, taking the Emperor’s Isle and other Armstris holdings, then landing on(or at least threatening) the Home Island.

On land, the United Republic planned to rescue its men in Tropia, using all of its main armour (3,800 tanks) to penetrate and hopefully cripple Armstris forces. That assault came on the 18th of May, and was quickly stopped following a large number of tank losses in multiple engagements, due to the furious Self Propelled Artillery guns of the enemy as well as general technological supremacy.

For the Inamortans, the war was looking increasingly hopeless. No real victories had been won, and it seemed the mainland was to soon come under assault. The proud military had proven to be weak against the Armstris (despite its strength compared to many other nations). Some even contemplated surrendering or seeking an Armistice, suspiciously looking north as thousands of Noran troops streamed unto cities and railroads to “protect” the Inamortans. The navy at least was alive again, albeit with a mere 100 ships. So far slivers of the Inamortan mainland had been lost to Wulf and Johan’s advance. Counterattacks seemed to fail, with Inamortan technology behind.

Possibly the only good news was that a new tank had come into production, theFist-III. It could just match Pegronian designs and some Armstris designs. However, no tank of any nation in the world had yet surpassed the Armstris “Warrior” tank, which was fast becoming a major component of the assault on the URI.

However, the Armstris contribution to the war effort had been slashed. Production had considerably decreased, and it seemed the masters of naval warfare might lose (therefore severing supply lines to the First Colonies and Westland, which would seriously damage Wulf and Hog). So the Inamortans kept hope, certain that victory would arrive eventually.

In 1914, the optimists said that Inamorta and the Red Union would win in mere months. The pessimists said the war would be bloody, and give us a victory in a few years. The realists said that the war would be deathly no matter what, and us losing was possible if not likely. Now, the optimists say maybe the League can win in three years’ time by out-producing the enemy. The pessimists say the League will lose within the year. The realists say in victory or defeat, millions will die- and victory seems bloody well unlikely. I agree with none of those. I say nor the Pact nor the League will win the war, because war doesn’t have any victors.” – Inamortan officer in 1915 (uncertain where/how the text was actually recorded)

The United Republic of Inamorta hereby declares that it will never bow to the Imperialist evil, never surrender nor make peace. Every man, woman and child will give their lives, for better to die for our land than live with the imperialist enemy.” –Inamortan Minister of War speech declaring Inamorta will not seek peace

On June 13th, the main pockets of resistance in Tropia surrendered, and the rest were wiped out. Hog resumed his advance northward, and with his force combined with Wulf’s, the Inamortans could only perform a fluid defence. Despite this, the Inamortans were masters of desert warfare, and the Armstris were taking heavy casualties.

Pegronian forces under Johan launched their own offensive into the URI. With overwhelming numbers and equipment, they drove south and west, severing multiple liaison points between the URI and the Red Union. 500,000 Pegronians would also establish spearheads in mainland Nora to be used as spring boards for future operations. The Pegronian foothold had been secured, and things were looking grim for the League.

On June 20th, the Norans successfully implemented a complete naval blockade against the Home Island. This severely hit the Armstris economy, already struggling, and also meant no further supplies could be sent to Wulf and Hog. The Norans were strangling the Armstris Empire. With such a crisis unfolding, the Emperor ordered the Navy to produce the cheapest vessels possible in the greatest of numbers. So the Armstris Imperial Navy began, for the first time, mass production of submarines. The Emperor wanted the siege lifted at all cost.

In Inamorta, Johan, Wulf and Hog set the date for Operation Supremacy, the plan to kill off Inamorta was set for the 20th of July, in just one month. The Norans, meanwhile, had placed 1,175,000 men in Inamorta, yet none at the frontline. The Inamortans almost knew what was coming, but could not stop it. They just hoped that the Red Union would think them valuable enough and not invade.

The Armstris garrisons above Inca all left their islands and focused onto Norso. The garrison in Norso could last for a whole year with its current supplies, and Norso housed 1,000,000 men, 450 ships and 1,000 planes. The Norans happily gobbled up isle after isle, but did not invade Norso. It was simply too well defended, and served no real purpose.

In the Home Island, the Navy notified the Emperor that 700 submarines would be available by the end of 1915, however, after that was done the Home Island would not have enough resources to build any more ships in effective numbers. The Emperor approved the project nonetheless.

Life in the Home Island was becoming increasingly horrific. The populace was well-disciplined, but even though crime did not increase, rations were lower than ever. Hundreds were starving every single day, and even worse, if the siege went into winter tens of thousands would die. However, the people of the Armstris Empire were sure that the Imperial Navy would save them yet, and stayed true to Empire and Emperor.

On July 5th, Wulf and Hog received 170,000 men and 600 tanks. They were supposed to receive 650,000 men and 1,500 tanks, however the recent siege of the Home Island made such a demand impossible. Even worse, these 170,000 men were not the highly trained, devoted Armstris men, but the dregs of the Empire, the sub-rouge from the First Colonies. To make matters worse, the Inamortans were finally beginning to strengthen themselves. A powerful defensive line, the “Final Line”, wound through the horrific Inamortan deserts, ready to face any Armstris onslaught. To face the Pegronians, multiple semi-defensive lines had been built, and 800,000 armed them. the Fist-III was also appearing in large numbers.

On the 6th the Dorans sent 50 ships to the Armstris Naval Garrison in Armstris Occupied Pars. The Red Union strictly and directly notified Dora of its displeasure, and warned against further Doran involvement. Whilst it appeared threatening, the Red Union was in fact worried about Dora. its navy could truly turn the tables...
