Hand-drawn African maps
@Carking the 6th challenged me to draw a map of Africa with borders and stuff. He failed to specify whether I was allowed to use a proper map as a reference, so I first did one from memory and then a better one with the help of Google Maps.
Apologies for the photo quality; I have an actually good camera but was too lazy to dig it out, so you can nobly try to read my now-blurry handwriting.
Here is the good one I did with references:
With zoomed-in images because this is a pain to read:
It's still not great because it didn't occur to me to sketch in some of the borders lightly before filling in all of them, resulting in some countries like Ethiopia being wildly off scale.
And here is the one I did from memory:
I know it's bad. While I was drawing it I could tell some things were off but didn't know how to fix them without making it worse.
I don't think I'll be ready for the 1700s follow-up challenge from memory, as I know next to nothing about African history.

Damn, that is seriously impressive.

I was expecting you to use a reference as it would simply be unnoble to force use of memory; even the first cartographers had the earth itself as reference.
The memory map is excellent for having memory though. You did west Africa better than 99% of the general population.
The reference map is very nice, basically perfect, apart from the DRC and Algeria (comrade Zhukov would not be happy wish this one) the borders look exactly as how one would envision them…
But then you look north… and…
JORDAN! What did it do to deserve this? Whyyy?! Whyy….
9.5/10 if you just count Africa, down to 8/10 if West Asia is counted as well. Actually, 7 if you count Europe too. Fr*nce is shown.

My familiarity with Africa is 90% because I play Worldle. Every time a country I'm unfamiliar with comes up, I assume it's in Africa, and head to Google Maps to see if I can work out which one it is if I can't narrow it down in three guesses. (Which is technically cheating, but it's also massively expanding my geographical knowledge, which is the main reason why I play.) Also, North Africa I mostly remember because of Clash of Nations, which is why Morocco is so huge.Carking the 6th wrote:

The fact the borders are there (it should be called north (S)pain) still makes me sad…
I insist… Syria and Lebanon… turkey looks like they didn’t do very well in the war of independence… Iraq got hit by a rock… Saudis and Yemen are alright I guess… and then Jordan, Israel and Palestine… why? Why?!!!

Well, partly because I wasn't trying very hard on anything but Africa, and the other stuff was just there to add context. I don't like drawing continents in a vacuum, and I needed Arabia at least to get Africa's east coast right because I remember their shapes in relation to each other.
I might be able to do a better job on the Middle East if I try doing a proper map of just it, but I can't guarantee anything.
