Plus, melee combat doesn't happen in modern warfare due to the range of the battles which can take place over dozens of miles.
My point exactly. This started happening in WWII, in one massive naval attack in the Pacific, the ships never met. It was only planes!

Wasn't that Midway? Or was that another one?
Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. -Winston Churchill Attack rapidly, ruthlessly, viciously, without rest, however tired and hungry you may be, the enemy will be more tired, more hungry. Keep punching. -George S. Patton

I'm not sure, Pacific operations are not my strong point, I will admit.

Same. I've only read a few books on the Pacific. I know it was some battle early in the war though...

I know some Jap CV were sunk, and I think some were at Midway too so that sounds like a good bet, but I will check.... tomorrow!

Yeah, after Midway the Japanese Carriers were pretty much on the run. They weren't able to do much as the war went on due to dwindling air force and navy.

The war of the Pacific was very important...
"I came, I saw, I conquered" Written in a report to Rome 47 B.C., after conquering Pharnaces at Zela in Asia Minor in just five days; as quoted in Life of Caesar by Plutarch; reported to have been inscribed on one of the decorated wagons in the Pontic triumph, in Lives of the Twelve Caesars, Julius, by Suetonius. "Alea iacta est" Gaius Julius Caesar.

I may be too late, but the English tried disembarking in Cartagena de Indias with a 30,000 force and were defeated by Blas de Lezo.
