Lewis B. Puller -- the Marines' Marine.

Forum attachment

My father was a U.S. Navy Seabees officer who defended Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, with Chesty Puller's Marines in 1942. Despite inter-service rivalries, my father, for the duration of his life, never had a single bad thing to say about service members of the U.S. Marine Corps. Two of my father's sons -- my older brothers -- volunteered for the Marines during later conflicts.

After I graduated from college, and one of my fraternity brothers and best friends completed Marine Corps Officer Candidate School at Quantico to become a new Marine second lieutenant, my friend briefly stayed with my family in Florida. Newly indoctrinated in the Navy-Marine Corps rivalry, my cocky friend teased my dad about his Navy service. My father, who was never inclined to openly discuss the horrors he witnessed during the war, replied to my friend, in a humbling moment, "John, I was with Chesty Puller at Henderson Field." At which point, both of them teared up for reasons I did not fully grasp at the time.

So, "Good night, Chesty, wherever you are."

And a big "oorah" to the Greatest Generation.

Ah,Chesty Puller! He Was a Great Marine...Award 5 Navy crosses and 1 distinguished service cross and many more awards for his amazing selflessness and bravery, I Admire him greatly,he is like a "Role model" to me...He was one of the great men who inspired my future career : The Marines. Chesty Puller,in my opinion, Helped us win the war. He was a great leader for great men..

I was born in Cuba and came to the US as a child in 1966. To my recollection, the Cuban military saw action twice- sinking a German sub off Cuban shores and sending a 3.000 man brigade to France. I never met any of those guys, but I'm sure many of them acted bravely while on duty.

When I went to work for NASA in 1976, there were 4 older co-workers who saw action in WW2. My boss Bill McMurran served in the US navy at a destroyer that escorted convoys across the Atlantic. Bob Wright served as an artillery man in the US army. Ed Noriega who served as a merchant marine. And Vitto Trett, who was in the Polish army, was captured, and was in a Nazi concentration camp during most of the war before he immigrated to America. We thank them for their service and may God bless their souls.

So....Hitler is your hero? Or Is it someone who attempted to assassinate him?

I have a family emergency so I would be somewhere near the hospital sometimes. Sometimes, it is just my phone that is with me.

Either you don't know your facts or you are really messed up as he committed suicide ......... :wallbash

LOL maybe he is talking abt attempted attl on hitler by Claus Von stafffeunberg

I wish he didnt fail because rommel and many good generals would have been alive and war would have been over

Claus Von Stauffenberg....He should have succeeded. But Hitler walked to the end of the room when the explosive went off... Some How, Hitler survived over 30 Assassination attempts in his life time. It made him over-confident. Man...Many many Good men were executed because they were believed to be part of the July plot,The sad thing is,most of them were loyal to the third reich...except that very few, who were brave enough to stand up and act.

There is no guarantee that the war would have been over. German generals could have decided to fight on, especially against the Russians and in all likelihood they would have fought a more effective war than Hitler did. Having Hitler in charge meant that German armies were not as effective as they could not fight an elastic defense, as most generals wanted to, instead of the stand and die orders Hitler preferred, which shortened the war.

My Great Grandfather served on a US Destroyer in the pacific. I don't know a whole lot about him (he fought, came home, had a kid, and died I do believe) but what I do know is he had a piece of Ki-43 Hayabusa fuselage in his house somewhere. I never got to see it, but I always wanted to.

I wish he was alive,so I could Thank him for his service... He shall Be remembered and honored. That's very interesting he had such an amazing Piece of History, I wish we had a picture!

You could put it all in one post. ;)

This thread reminds us that it is not the generals who win the battles and the war, but rather, the average soldier who does. A nod of respect and appreciation to the greatest generation of the modern age, if not the greatest of all time.
