Although most generals will take the credit for the victories .... except for the smart ones who know it is their men that won the day.

Yes, I agree with Little Racoon on this matter. For it does not take brains to win the war,but men with guts. And anybody who says other wise,Should be drafted, and sent off to war with a rifle and At least 5-10,000 Enemy soldiers waiting for him.

That is the harsh truth of war.

Funny Napoleon would say that (cue disastrous Russian campaign).

Not in modern day. Every hero's story should be told, every sacrifice should be know because every hero did something extraordinary and every sacrifice means another family would live without a loved one.

At least it will be told to their children and their children's children, much like how this thread showed.

Think about how many hero stories there are that no one knows about because there was no one there to witness it or no one survived to tell it. For every one story we have, I bet there are 5, or more, we will never know about. :|

Agree. That would probably happen a lot when the good guys lose! I bet there are many untold stories from places like from concentration camps in North Korea, Nazi Germany and Stalin's Russia. Or a failed rebellion in the countryside I tell about in Chapter 15 of my book titled 'Memories from The Land of the Intolerant Tyrant' about the counter revolution in the 1960's in my native Cuba ... :(

yes nazis were bad i believe but not the German people they didnt know what they were doing in genocide they just followed their leader who were really bad in some matters but otherwise they thought they were justdoing it for countrys betterment (rommel and many german generals were good too along with soldiers and civilians)

I think you may be underestimating how many German people knew about what was happening in their country during the war. People that just disappear, never to be seen again, get talked about, and people draw conclusions quickly. It took a whole system to do what they did, and that system leaked info. No where near the majority of the country, but a sizeable percentage knew and were complicit, whether through direct knowledge or pointed indifference.

they couldnt resist

gestapo was all over them i dont think anyone would want to die in order to try and fail resisting the leaders of their own country

Even under threat, they are guilty. In a sense, anyone who knew about the concentration camps and let it be, German or not, are guilty. But I understand how easy it is to collapse under extreme peer pressure. Can't blame them, but can't say they're innocent.

Complicity by pointed indifference enables dictatorships and terrorism ... :(

A lot of Nazi soldiers have no idea what is going on which is really sad.

Before 1939, it must have been obvious that Nazis had a racist streak- particularly vs. Jews, Blacks, Slavs, and a few others. It's a sad thing that this racism resulted in the genocide of many millions ... :(

As long as you realize that the majority of German soldiers, who were not in the SS, were not members of the nazi party. Those who were probably had a good idea what was going on as they bought in to the propaganda being put out by the government, and those who weren't were not blind to it either. Soldier's rumour mill would have seen to that.
