For this "Z" volume, I thought I might throw something modern in.
-Hint: It is not in active service right now.

YF-17 Cobra. Says so in the pic.
Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. -Winston Churchill Attack rapidly, ruthlessly, viciously, without rest, however tired and hungry you may be, the enemy will be more tired, more hungry. Keep punching. -George S. Patton

The right choice is YF-17 Cobra.

YF-17 was an interesting aircraft......a descendant of the F-5, and by extension the T-38. Insane thrust-to-weight ratio (1.25!), crisp handling, but light armament...only two AIM-9s and one 20mm Vulcan came standard. Then the beefed-up version (the F-1 lost many of the Cobra's advantages, not to mention speed. US Navy shoulda used a navalized version of the F-16.
