The HFY genre

Has anyone heard of this particular genre? As a fan of the 40k universe and other similar things, this definitely grasped my attention.

Unfortunately, it is on reddit, but not too hard to find. I recommend reading the classics section first.

Essentially the genre takes on the view of humanity as the alien presence, and in, usually, a military themed venture, we surprise, scare and impress the others. A few do that with our extinction, but it's still a pretty decent read.

Would this be like Mass Effect or Dead Space?

I'm into warhammer fantasy more than 40k but fantasy died and became "age of Sigmar" which cross the two games.

Although the genre is very interesting I have 2 40k novels and 2 for fantasy, the major theme of all of it is victory is too high a price and peace is done through the death of freedom and truth.

Since you brought up 40k I presume your referring to a similar genre, or is it something different? And before anything else im not going to reddit.

I'm more of a fantasy fan, but reading space marine is interesting too...at least

I mean fantasy shows characters that are more heroic than space marines, even on tabletop, have you seen an ordinary human againts a great deamon and won?

Exactly, that's why I love the Abnett books and the Imperial guard, it's following the regular footsloggers through campaign after campaign, and you've got the inevitable wearing down of the regiment as characters slowly succumb, one by one.

Phew, you guys read some weird books.

The past is a foreign country.

They have very nice strategic tactics detailed out quite well. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when it works out.

It's also very dark and sometimes depressing, but that makes it interesting.
