I love how they show the stores as having a ton of stock of just about anything. 1970s Russia didn't have enough sh*t to distribute minimal rations, let alone have entire stores full of it.Carking the 6th wrote:

To be fair life was relatively normal in 60’s and 70’s. The Soviet people were probably better off in some ways than Russians today. The USSR was the second wealthiest country on the planet and was decently well off. Still more poor than the west though. It was only the Stalin and Collapse era where all this starvation and degradation you hear about took place. The real plight at this time as being a political opponent, or living in the puppet states, also many provincial cities. People in say Moscow and Leningrad were more well off.

Actually, the rule was generally that the farther from Moscow you were, the better the QoL. East Germany > Poland > Ukraine > Rural Russia. I'm not sure how it was in Serbia/Yugoslavia was in that regard, but I can't imagine it was too bad compared to other places. Definitely horrible conditions by Western standards, though.srpska boj wrote:

Eh, rapid socialist industrialization in the early SU already kinda began the process. Probably wasn't too far from western standards until the postwar era though, when the west completely revolutionized its economy and QoL.Carking the 6th wrote:

Had it not been for Stalin’s garbage police’s and ww2, the USSR probably could have kept up with the west pretty easily. The fact they even managed to remain quite close was a miracle, considering all the damage they faced.
