After getting an e-mail that had info in it concerning the V-22 Osprey, I remembered something I read about them. They are very lightly armed and can therefore not easily protect themselves(apparently, I have never fought/seen one fight) and can have no other aircraft to protect them since they are too slow to keep up with jets and too fast for helicopter support so I thought I would come here and ask a question.
How should the V-22's problem be solved? I have thought of three options:
1. Fit jets that can rotate like the V-22's propellers
2. Operators bring piston aircraft back into service to protect it
3. Arm it to the freaking teeth with grenade launchers, machine cannons and rockets!
What do you guys think?

Isnt this a common problem for all transport aircraft? An Osprey is only slightly slower than a C-130.
Why do you think they cant be escorted by jets? Sure the cruising speed of an F16 is much faster. That just means it has to fly back and forth some more, or use a cicular patern. Thats what they do to protect the (much slower) helicopters the Osprey is replacing. So the problem is getting easier, not harder.
Fitting more powerful (jet) engines to a V22 would make it a completely different aircraft.
Arming it would reduce its loadcapacity.
You really think a piston engined aircraft (souped up Mustang) could effectively protect an Osprey from an F16?
What if I'm indoctrinated and actually fighting the good guys?

No, obviously not. But an American aircraft(used by allies or US itself) isn't really going to run into a F-16, is it? I was thinking more along the lines of a Sea Fury with a modern engine and an autocannon. The normal Sea Fury could shoot down jets but I don't think they had much ammo for prolonged missions, mainly ground strikes. I am pretty sure the problems from ground forces that an Osprey would run into would be more along the lines of an old AA bought from the Russians or a couple RPG's, both weapons being used by badly trained militia's.

I forgot about that, thanks for pointing it out. Makes that idea a lot worse.

How so? Just more powerful engines that let it go faster. Granted, it would probably get a new designation and such, but still.

Lol, there is no actual need to continue this. I knew I had heard of a gunship variant of it and I quickly found it.

You wrote 'protect them'. These gunship mods are intended to give it more offensive capabilities. Thats a form of protection too, I guess
For achieving a significantly higher speed (without sacrificing VTOL, payload, range, etc) you would need more than just better engines.
Jet engines work best at speed. They're not very efficient for vertical take-off. You would need HUGE enigines and therefor a much bigger aicraft. The Osprey's engines are a very good compromise between liftpower and speed.

Well, you seem to know a lot more about an Osprey's mechanics, so I won't argue with any of that.
Protect them were probably the wrong words as I meant to, well, blow anything that tries to shoot at it to kingdom come.

Completely disregarding what we talked about yesterday Bill, I would say fitting jet engines to the osprey pretty much creates what you see in Black Ops 2, I think.

Alas, I have not played Black Ops 2. If it helps, I played the first one and MW 1-3 as well as WaW. Oh, and Big Red One.

WW2 style call of duty was the best
Here's the Osprey btw.

Oh, thanks. CoD really are uncreative, aren't they? They recycle storylines and can't come up with good fake weapons. I mean, why don't they have a rail gun in any new CoD and the M2 Browning in WaW?

I think it's more about the multiplayer than campaign. As long as the hordes of testosterone-induced squeakers are happy about the multiplayer everything else is shoved aside. I mean the newest game blatantly copies titanfall's boost-jump and power punch thing etc etc.

I know, it is sick. These energy-drink infused 12-year olds just go straight to online and skip the campaign. I nearly always play the campaign through before online, the exception being GTA V.

Recent CoDs are bull****. I actually play Call of Duty United Offensive in multiplayer so I don't have to play the new games, which have no tactic whatsoever.
The past is a foreign country.

I find medal of honour airborne to quench my thirst for all-round games, but as you may have noticed I'm much more of a strategy gamer so I prefer to play the Wargame series and things like MoW and CoH...and Bytro games.
I always play the campaign first so I can get a grip of the game, I find I learn more about a game through campaign than multiplayer.

Yeah, it is much easier to learn through a tutorial rather than button mashing, right?

Definitely, If I stand a chance rather than being spawn-camped I learn sh*t.

I rarely plan any FPS at all. I am partial to Halo Reach but I only play living dead and because I'm a really high level. However this is turning into that thread I made about games. Should we go back on topic or leave it now?
