An assault rifle is a fully automatic selective-firerifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine.[1][2][3][4][5] Assault rifles were first used during World War II. Though Western nations were slow to accept the assault rifle concept after World War II, by the end of the 20th century they had become the standard weapon in most of the world's armies, replacing battle rifles and sub-machine guns. Examples include the StG 44, AK-47and the M16 rifle.
The Germans were the first to pioneer the assault rifle concept, during World War II, based upon research that showed that most firefights happen within 400 metres (1,300 ft) and that contemporary rifles were over-powered for most small arms combat.[6][7][8][9][10] They sought to develop a select-fire intermediate powered rifle combining the firepower of a submachine gun with the accuracy and range of a rifle.[6][7][8][9][10] This was done by shortening the standard 7.92×57mm cartridge to 7.92×33mm and giving it a lighter 125 grain bullet, that limited range but allowed for more controllable automatic fire.[7][8][9][10][11] A smaller, lighter cartridge also allowed soldiers to carry more ammunition "to support the higher consumption rate of automatic fire."[6]
The result was the Sturmgewehr 44, which the Germans produced in large numbers; approximately half a million were made.[7][8][9][10] Unlike previous rifle designs it introduced an over-the-barrel gas system, straight stock and pistol grip to reduce recoil and improve handling characteristics.[6] "The principle of this weapon...was probably the most important advance in small arms since the invention of smokeless powder."[11]
The term assault rifle is generally attributed to Adolf Hitler, who for propaganda purposes used the German word "Sturmgewehr" (which translates to "assault rifle"), as the new name for the MP43, subsequently known as theSturmgewehr 44 or StG 44.[8][12][13][14][15][16] Other sources dispute that Hitler had much to do with coining the new name besides signing the production order.[17] The StG 44 is generally considered the first selective fire military rifle to popularize the assault rifle concept. Today, the term assault rifle is used to define firearms sharing the same basic characteristics as the StG 44.
The past is a foreign country.

Why was the battle that decided the Soviet advance into eastern Germany.

I completely agree. Montgomery actually only commanded at El Alamein because nobody else could. They were either commanding in another theater, dead, captured, fired, or wounded.

So many quotes. But I do agree. The StG 44 gave hell to both sides in the hands of a trained soldier.

in such case Your friends are muslim terrorists , as Syria was pretty much the only civil State in the Middle East with tolerance to all religious dogmas. As far as spreading more Western Propaganda I will tell you this, do not believe everything you read or see . Read above , I gave examples of how wrong Western Media was during the conflicts in Georgia and now in Ukraine.
Mate, around 83% of Syria is Sunni, yet Assad is Shiite. He doesn't allow majority Sunnis into his government. 'Religious tolerance'. And my friend isn't a Muslim terrorist. He is an oil exporter, who says that Assad is bad as hell. Do you know what a barrel bomb is?
Ok. Fair enough. You can't believe anything youread either. It's Russian propaganda.
1) Assad is not Shiite, he is Alawite . And your friend must be a sunni muslim, apparently everyone else is bad as hell to them .
2) I told you I read both , Western and Russian, the truth is always somewhere in between. you just have to think a bit and see through obvious BS from both sides, so far you are failing.

3) So what if his grandad fought in the Wehrmacht?

This might be a shock to you, but Assad is married to a Sunni, most of his army is Sunni....Russia that supports Assad has a near 100% Muslim population that is Sunni. Hell the Chechens who are literally begging to be sent to fight for Assad are all Sunni
3) If his grandad was a Ukrainian that fought for Germans, he was a traitor. More than that, there is a very high chance that he was a war criminal. Ukrainian nationalists slaughtered Polish population in Soviet 'half' of Poland. They made NKVD look like boyscouts. I am not judging/accusing anyone, just stating a historical fact.

They have also tried to do the same now in Donbass ( they got their asses handed to them ), and had success in doing so in Odessa , burning the building with over 50 people in it, and finishing of the ones that tried to escape the fire.

Say what you want but well the Russkis were just as bad Raping women and slaughtering women the Red Army made Ukrainian Nationalists look like nothing...
So think of Russia as a little gem if you want but overall they were just as bad as the Nazis in WW2.

Do not know if you realise but most Ukrainian civilians supported the German invasions so get over it.

Amazing!, this guy even admits he is Ukranian NAzi ( from the whole family of them ) and tries to excuse all the atrocities that his kind committed and is committing today by pointing at something or someone else else ( baseless point btw ).
This is a very pissed off group that is plotting a revenge since their defeat in WWII, you and your kind will be shown your place again.

Read a ACTUAL history and not the made up bullshit in the Russian ones... look at the amount of people in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporhyzhye who greeted the germans with flowers...
And you know why they were greeted with flowers and gifts?
BECAUSE THEY DID NOT WANT TO BE WITH THE SOVIET UNION.
