Send them to sea and hope a shark gets them?
I am sure you know this, upgrading a damaged unit does not heal that unit, so you have a higher level but still damaged unit.
So as soon as you've done a bit of fighting in 1.5, you end up with a bunch of units at very low health, like 10-20%... what to do with them? They don't merge together anymore like in 1.0, nor do they automatically upgrade... and tech advances soon makes them useless anyway.
So what to do with them? It seems a waiste to select them for an EXPENSIVE (!!) upgrade, cause you don't want to get a low health unit as a result anyway... but if you just park them somewhere, the boys will keep eating... what to do? There's not even a disband command, so do you have to go out and find some strong enemy and crash into them??

Exactly... if they healed during upgrade, there wouldn't be this problem!
I totally agree with K.Roko that a "disband unit" command would be both welcome and historically accurate. It would be an interesting twist to strategy as well if you received a small percentage of the unit's "current value resource cost" as a refund based on the unit's health, however certainly not very much of a refund. Alternatively perhaps a boost during the upgrade process to make a really battered unit more viable to heal and plan for future usage.
I think there should be a "reinforce" mechanic rather than a disband mechanic added. I could see paying the percentage of total recruitment cost missing from the unit to get a full strength unit back. It seems to me it could work a lot like upgrading and just take the unit out of action for a little while. I don't think it's unbalanced or overpowered, but Bytro may not like that it cuts into one of the main things average players use gold for.
Here is a new and wonderful idea.
How about disbanding them in a province center to give that province a little boost in morale.
"The garrison has been here for days now, and you people are no longer rebellious, we will now disband the military "
