What I would do is try to make allies on the mainland and if I can’t do that then I would bunker down and get ready for a Coalition to try their luck. Also I would do some Island hopping.
Advance or Invasion?
As a matter of fact, have been thinking about a crucial issue recently. For example if I lead Japan, and I watch Asian nations expanding around me, what should I do? Interfering or developing would be more important? I understand that resources should be shared by the priorities, but a bloody war can harm the advancement as far as research or constructions are concerned.
I hope I can initiate a debate on this, and form an imperative decision.

I did that actually last time, but Korea attacked me after I offered him to be my coalition mate. Being an island country compel players to maintain the status quo in the early period of the game.
Well when I get sick of being attacked as an island I just build a huge navy for fun. Your not going to win the round but you will be a pain to defeat.
It's an excellent idea, thank you.
Again keep in mind you will never win by just naval spamming but it can be fun to gun down everything thrown at you.
