No, you cannot just fly anywhere on the map. Your planes will go into convoy mode if the target (either to attack or move to) is outside the range of the plane(s). The white circle you see when the plane is selected is the range the plane can fly. If it is outside that circle it must have another airstrip or factory within range to make flying to the target possible. Also different planes have different ranges and if grouped together they can only fly the shortest distance of the group. I am including a screenshot to show the circles. (Fyi the province shown is out of range for these aircraft to use it for an airstrip)
