I like your thinking. This has already been suggested and I think it is now over to the developers. The suggestion was to add a Unit List right below or above Province List and work it pretty much as you said.
Army Administration Tab?
The Province Administration tab is proving to be extremely helpful in keep my empire sorted.
I am looking for any similar tool for keeping the military sorted. At present, the number and types of units is still easily tracked with my failing memory. As the game develops, I am pretty sure I will lose track of units and what they are supposed to be doing.
Now I could resort to an out of game tracking tool (stickies on the screen, scribbled notes on the desk pad, illegible scrawls on the corner of the white board) but it would be nice if I could actually push a few buttons and see a list of all the tank units, what their morale level is, what province they are in and what their current mission is. Even nicer if I could sort on each of those fields (and include all / some) unit types.
The greater ease of playing provided by being able to quickly find all units less that 50% morale and make sure they are headed home, that the attack on Bad Guy Capitol has sufficient mixed combat forces detailed to it and that the convoy actually has a screening force would greatly improve the game.
Hoping this exists already (no obvious) or that it is in the works. Heck, if this were a High Command feature, I would be plunking down those drachmas right now.

I and others have made many suggestions about the lists on the right and how to improve them. Among my most urgently desired is the ability to sort by Money income.BRDubbs wrote:

It seemed like such a waste to destroy an entire battle station just to eliminate one man. But Charlie knew that it was the only way to ensure the absolute and total destruction of Quasi-duck, once and for all.The saying, "beating them into submission until payday", is just golden...pun intended.

Although there is not [yet?] the ability to sort units the way you've described, there is a way to find and identify lost units.
Just do a gigantic right-click-and-drag over an area to select all the units in that area. This will only select your own forces. However, if all of the forces you encompass with this method are not yours, then you will view them, instead. But if even one of those forces are yours, then only yours are show.
Additionally, if you hold down the SHIFT key, you can right-click-and-drag over an area to select all the provinces that you own in that area.
