When a unit is attacked, whether in cooldown or not, the attacked unit will defend itself and the attacker will be damaged.
Attack and deffense timer?
Hello,
I have a question. Lets say I have an enemy who has one stack of 5 cruisers and 3 destroyers fighting my 3 subs. I have another stack of 1 battleship, 1 destroyer and 1 cruiser attacking his stack. Ofc, only Battleship is attacking from the safe distance.
Now, lets say that I split my stack and use my cruiser (come closer in the range) and attack him while he is on attack cooldown (lets say he has 25min time for the next attack). My question is: will my cruiser suffer any damage since his units are on attack colldown? How does this work?

That is true of melee or close combat battles. Each attack stroke is met with a return/defense fire.
it is not true of range bombardment. So you can attack one target with as many artillery/naval bombardment from range attacks as you want, and the enemy will not return fire.

Only if the attacked range unit actively fires back, when it is on attack cooldown you are save to land a ranged hit without return fire.
Actually if the defending ranged unit is within firing range of the attacker, it will defend. There is no defend timer. Only attack timers. If the enemy attack timer has ticked, it can't attack.
