Overkill is just a consequence of the variance and targeting distribution (x-factors). e.g. if there is one infantry left with 1 HP but the targeting distribution randomness happens to distribute 5 HP to the infantry you waste 4 HP with overkill.
Attacking Fortifications
I couldn't find a good thread discussing the strategy of attacking troops inside fortifications. They provide ~40% - 75% defense bonus. L5 even hides troops. Put them in a city and almost makes an attack via tanks worthless with the 50% hit they take. Add some AA and cheap militia in a forested area (+75%)...it makes for great defense. Very expensive to take. I'm up against it now...its early in the game...no rockets. Thinking Artillery.

Correction to the above calculations on RRG: They do not attack every 15 min. More like once an hour. Against a Fort they will hit with (3) damage every hour so total of 3*24 = 72 damage. Not sure how that is spread when there are more than one building (other than the fortress).
I wanted to get an idea of how many HP a fortress has. How much do you need to hit a fort with to bring it down to level 4, 3, etc.
I sent 6 L2 Rockets at a L5 Fortress (no other buildings). This should inflict a total of 50*6=300 damage (give or take some randomness). It was reduced to L4 at 50%. So 300 damage brings L5 to half of L4. If it took 300 damage would it be logical to say that 200 of those pts brought it down to L4 and another 100 points brought it down to 50% of an L4?
Another site: L5 at 60%. Hit with 8 L2 Rockets. Reduced to L4 at 10%. So 400 pts this time. There was also a barracks located at this site. So clear to me that the damage is shared among the buildings...makes sense. Unknown how much damage was taken by barracks. Hit the site with 4 more L2 rockets .. 200 pts. Reduced the barracks to L3 at 25%. 8 more rockets brought it down to L1 at 60%. Total of 1000 pts damage brought L5 at 60% down to L1 at 60%. Morale dropped to 2%
Just one more tidbit of analysis. If you have 5 sites in the area that can make rockets. Don't need much just a L2 airport and IC. Then you can make (at least) 2 rockets a day in each one or 10 rockets. So in 2 days I have 20 rockets that can do 1000 pts of damage. I'd need 14 RRGs to do that same amount of damage and I'm not considering stacking penalty or the fact that you need L3 Infrastructure in all those cities to make RRGs.
If you look above, freezy said they have 20 HP per level. As mentioned above the powers of a unit get diced up among it's various abilities with probably some specific targeting parameters depending on what is there and some randomness. Thus, knocking down a fort with units, especially if the target contains troops is a difficult way to estimate fort HP.jamidan333 wrote:
