This is probably a repeat post but I couldn't find the answer searching.
Do all teams start at the same time?
I just started a game and on day 3 I was attacked by armies who were at level 5 and 6 - levels that I couldn't even research.
How is that possible?

Yes, all people start the match on the same day. I'm not sure how you had lvl 5 and 6 units coming at you. Are you sure that is the level they are at? Maybe they got some insane bonus from being a new player.

It depends on the game, some start when they are filled, others start immediately. I remember joining a midgame 100 players map as Colorado, AI had researched something (but still I had to start over) and everyone around me was more powerful.

it depends upon the map for example in hww maps big countries start of with day 7 in research and some countries depending upon their doctrine can research some troops earlier.
