Pardon my ignorance as I'm fairly new to this game.. but what does the black figure with hat symbol mean next to opponent armies. Can someone pleas enlighten me?

This symbol means you are looking at a unit as a kind of "snapshot in time". It is showing you the last known location of a unit that is actually out of sight range of any of your units. if you click the unit with the symbol, you will see it says "intelligence from" and the time it was last spotted. if you attempt to move to the unit, you may find it is not actually still there, because the other player may have moved it since your last intelligence report.ianbuc55 wrote:

If, that is, the spy-in-the-fedora symbol is associated with a shadowed unit icon; then it represents the intelligence regarding the shadowed unit at a given time, as shown in the unit pop-up box for the unit.Stormbringer50 wrote:

As I said above, more generally, the little-spy-in-the-fedora icon is used in a variety of intelligence and spy matters in the game.
