I don't know surely but my submarine sailed into center of destroyer squadron and they detected it.
So I think that they CAN spot submarines

Im not sure, 'cos if your subs sailed right into the center of the squadron, that means they got into battle, meaning they became visible.

Only naval bomber patrols and spies can find subs without having to fight them.
