I flew my squadron onto my carrier, travelled across the ocean and tried to attack a rail gun with my TBs. The game says they are in convoy. How do I get them into action?

Planes need to fly and land on a carrier. This means your carrier needs to be within flight range of the planes when you give the order to move to the carrier.
It sounds like you have planes loaded on cargo transport ships instead of on the carrier flight deck. To get them on a carrier from there you will need to swim the planes to an airbase on land and then fly to the carrier.
Splitting or merging carrier groups that include planes can cause the planes to become separated from the carrier. This issue is being worked on.
Tactical bombers need to be level 4 or higher to be carrier capable.

Thank you. I thought I flew my planes onto the carrier, but my TB are not level 4. I put a lot of time and effort into this only to find I didn't know what I was doing. The price of experience! Is this the best way to get questions like this answered?

If your game is a 1.5 game that was started recently than any level TB should be able to land on carriers.
